§ 06 - Common questions

Asked & answered.

The five questions readers ask us most often. Still have one? Send us a note →

What's the best label maker for home use?
For most homes, a Bluetooth label maker like the Nelko P21 or Phomemo D30 produces better-looking labels because you design them on a full smartphone screen. If you prefer phone-free, the Brother PT-D210 Bundle is the most recommended starter that includes tape in the box.
Are Brother and DYMO tapes interchangeable?
No. Brother uses TZe tape, DYMO uses D1 - they're physically incompatible cartridges. Use our Tape Lookup above to find the right refill for your machine.
Do I need a smartphone to use a label maker?
Only for Bluetooth models. The Nelko P21, Phomemo D30, and NIIMBOT D11 all require a smartphone app to print. The Brother PT-D210, PT-N10, and DYMO LabelManager 160 all have built-in keyboards and work completely standalone.
What's the best bundle with tape included?
The Brother PT-D210 Bundle is the most recommended - it ships with starter tape so you can print the day it arrives. Most other models are sold without tape and require a separate purchase.
What label tape can I buy at a local store?
Brother TZe is the most widely available in physical stores - Staples, Office Depot, Home Depot, Target. DYMO D1 is also in most stores, with less variety. Nelko, Phomemo, and NIIMBOT tapes are online-only.
