Label Maker Ideas for Dog Owners
Updated October 2026
A dog comes with a surprising amount of stuff: food, treats, medication, a leash for every season and a pile of paperwork from the vet. A label maker won't walk the dog for you, but it does stop the "which bag is the new food?" and "did he get his pill today?" questions. Here are nine uses that are actually worth the label tape.
One thing first: anything that gets wet, like a water bowl, a food scoop or a bin that lives by the door, needs laminated labels, not thermal ones. Thermal labels fade and peel once water gets to them.
1. Food bins: the date you opened the bag
Dry food goes stale weeks after the bag is opened. If you pour it into a storage bin, label the bin with the food name and the date you opened the bag. When you switch brands, the label tells you which bin holds the old food.
CHICKEN & RICE · OPENED 10/212. Portion size on the scoop or lid
If more than one person feeds the dog, put the amount right where people look: on the lid of the bin or the handle of the scoop. It ends the "I thought you fed her" double breakfast. Use a laminated label here, because scoops get washed.
1 CUP AM · 1 CUP PM3. Treat jars, sorted by purpose
Training treats, chews and the special treats for nail trims all look the same in a cupboard. A simple label on each jar keeps them apart, and it helps a pet sitter use the right ones.
TRAINING · SMALL PIECES4. Medication and supplements with the schedule
Label each bottle with when it's given, in the words your vet used. For a dog on more than one medication, a small label on the shelf edge with the daily schedule is easier to follow than reading every bottle. Always keep the original pharmacy label visible and add yours next to it, not on top of it.
HEARTWORM · 1ST OF EACH MONTH5. Vet records folder
Vaccination certificates, microchip number, insurance policy and the vet's phone number. Label one folder and keep everything in it. When a groomer, kennel or new vet asks for vaccination proof, it takes ten seconds to find.
MAX · VET & VACCINES6. Crate note for sitters and dog walkers
A small label on the crate or by the leash hook with the dog's name, feeding time and an emergency phone number helps anyone looking after your dog. Keep it short. Long notes don't get read.
LUNA · DINNER 6PM · CALL 555-01427. A grab-and-go walk bin by the door
Keep one bin per kind of walk: a rain bin with the raincoat, boots and a towel, and a summer bin with the water bottle and a cooling vest. Label the bins, and getting out of the door on a wet morning takes one grab instead of five.
RAIN WALK · COAT · BOOTS · TOWELNot sure what goes in a rain bin? Our sister store DogTrekly has a printable rainy dog walk checklist that's a good starting point.
8. Leash and harness hooks, by size
Two dogs, two harnesses that look almost the same? Label the hook, not the harness. Labels on fabric peel off quickly, but a hook label stays put for years.
BELLA · HARNESS M9. Travel bag checklist
Stick a short checklist inside the lid of the travel bag: food, bowls, leash, poop bags, medication, vet records. Check it before every trip and nothing gets left behind.
FOOD · BOWL · LEASH · BAGS · MEDSA note on ID tags
A label maker is not a replacement for a collar ID tag. Printed labels wear off on a collar within days. Use an engraved tag with your phone number, and keep your dog's microchip details up to date with the registry.
Which label maker works best for this
For most of the ideas above, the labels stay dry, so any Bluetooth thermal machine works. The Phomemo D30 is a good pick if you want neat fonts for jars and bins.
Check Phomemo D30 on Amazon ↗For the scoop, the water area and the bin by the door, choose laminated labels. The Brother P-Touch Cube Plus prints laminated tape that can be wiped clean.

Can I put a label on my dog's water bowl?
Yes, but only a laminated label, and put it on the outside of the bowl, away from where your dog drinks. Thermal labels peel off once they get wet.
Will labels survive the dishwasher?
Most labels won't. Even laminated labels last longer if you hand-wash the item. For bowls and scoops that go in the dishwasher, label the cupboard or shelf instead.
Can I use a label maker for my dog's ID?
No. Printed labels rub off a collar quickly. Use an engraved ID tag and keep the microchip registration current.
What should I put on a note for a pet sitter?
The dog's name, feeding times and amounts, any medication with the time it's due, and an emergency phone number. Keep each label to one line.
